Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Question #1?
How long will the relocation take?

That, of course, is a very logical question that every Chief Engineer and every General Manager has asked themselves and others.  Each Frequency Relocation Agreement (contract) is customized for each broadcaster based on their unique situation.  A good time range to apply for planning purposes is that the relocation can take approximately 12-24 months, following the initial market kickoff.  One reason for this extended time duration has been that Sprint Nextel has encountered issues that have taken much longer to work out then originally planned--items such as taxation on the new equipment, negotiation on the Frequency Relocation Agreement at the Group level, and more.  There are MANY actions to take regarding this project, and a 12-24 month timeframe will not be uncommon overall.

Frequently Asked Question #2?
Why do broadcasters get new and/or upgraded equipment; why not just retune the old equipment to the new band plan?

Most broadcasters currently have equipment which operates fine on the current BAS band plan; however, that equipment is not frequency agile, and cannot easily be retuned to the new band plan mandated by the FCC.  A lot of the 2GHz equipment at many of the stations nationwide is 10, 20, and 30 or more years old.  Although the equipment is working just fine on the current band plan, it cannot be easily returned to these new frequencies and as a result, upgrades and then full replacement are considerations.  Sprint Nextel will provide you with "comparable facilities," which means you will receive a new radio (1-for-1 swap) or upgrade to ensure you still have the same functionality you have today.  Keep in mind, this is at no cost to you.

Frequently Asked Question #3?
What will QComm services cost my station?

Since the 2GHz Relocation Project is the result of a "forced relocation" to the new frequency band plan which was generated by the FCC, the FCC (through their agent for this project, which is Sprint Nextel) pays for the new or upgraded equipment you will receive, the integration work required to change out the old equipment and replace it with the new (or upgraded), administrative fees you will incur, legal fees you will incur, and more.  In many cases, the equipment costs are paid to the equipment manufacturer(s) directly by Sprint Nextel.  But for all other costs, you are reimbursed by Sprint Nextel.  And if you choose to have an outside agency (such as QComm) manage this project for you, that is permissible, and a fully reimbursable item.  Bottom line:  QComm's Project Management fees can be included in your contract with Sprint Nextel and reimbursed to you.
